Prince Harry says he fears one of William’s children will ‘end up like me, the spare’

Prince Harry fears one of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children could end up in the role of ‘standby’ royal family, according to a candid new interview with The Telegraph.

“Although William and I have spoken about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his children are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare,” Harry said in the Friday post. “And it hurts, it worries me.”

“As I know very well, within my family, if it’s not us…it’s going to be someone else,” the prince said.

In his new memoir, the Duke of Sussex writes extensively about the dynamic of ‘heir’ versus ‘thrift’, with the latter serving as the title of the best-selling book.

The royal says the shorthand was used by his father, mother and grandparents throughout his life, writing that “there was no judgment about it, but also no ambiguity”.

“I was born in case something happened to William,” Harry says in the book. “I have been ordered to provide reinforcement, distraction, diversion and, if necessary, a spare. Kidney, maybe. Blood transfusion. Piece of bone marrow. All of this was made clear to me early on in life’s journey and steadily reinforced thereafter.

The prince indicated he felt uneasy about how this interaction could also impact William and Kate’s children, and he told the Telegraph he was “someone who loves fix things”.

“If I see wrongdoing and a pattern of behavior that is hurting people, I will do everything I can to try to change it,” Harry said.

While the Telegraph interview is seen as the final leg of his book tour, Harry also suggested he has even more stories to tell. The Prince said his original draft of ‘Spare’ was 800 pages – double the length of the finished product – and “could have been two books, in other words”.

He said he told his ghostwriter, JR Moehringer, some things for context, but would add the caveat that “there’s absolutely no way” he was putting them in the book.

“There are things that have happened, particularly between me and my brother, and to some extent between me and my father, that I just don’t want the world to know about,” Harry said, adding that he didn’t “think they would ever forgive me.

“Now you could say some of the things I put in there, well, they’ll never forgive me anyway,” the royal continued. “But the way I see it is I’m ready to forgive you for everything you’ve done, and I wish you’d sat down with me, properly, and instead of saying I’m delusional and paranoid , actually sit down and have a proper conversation about it, because what I would really like is some responsibility and an apology to my wife.
